With its portfolio, Dana is in a unique position to efficiently manage power conveyance from the AWP engine or batteries to the drivetrain, as well as from the power source to machine working functions.

Dana leverages its global network of 23 advanced technical centers – including the Dana China Technical Center in Wuxi, Jiangsu province – to customize fully integrated drive and motion products for AWPs produced in China, including scissor lifts, articulating boom lifts, and telescopic boom lifts.  The technical centers enable Dana engineers to develop and test global programs and create highly tailored solutions for individual applications that meet specific market requirements.

"The growth of the AWP market worldwide is propelled by tightening emissions regulations; vastly improved safety systems; reduced noise, vibration, and harshness characteristics; and the rapidly expanding rental market," said Aziz Aghili, president of Dana Off-Highway Drive and Motion Technologies.  "As Chinese and other global AWP manufacturers expand their product lines and total output to meet the demand, Dana offers a full spectrum of drive and motion products engineered and produced locally to meet the needs of domestic buyers as well as global export markets."

Portfolio Supports Electrification of AWPs
Dana has emphasized engineering and development for hybridization and electrification as part of the company's enterprise strategy, which focuses on leveraging the company's decades of electric engineering expertise and product knowledge to offer an extensive portfolio of advanced hybrid and electric technologies that have been engineered for multiple vehicle markets.

Dana has made a series of strategic moves to support electrification and hybridization, including the acquisition of the power-transmission and fluid power businesses of Brevini; a majority ownership of TM4 Inc, a motor and inverter manufacturer; and an agreement to purchase the Drive Systems segment of the Oerlikon Group.

Dana currently offers a wheel drive paired with a motor for electric-driven AWPs ranging from 3 to 7 tonnes (3 to 8 tons), and engineers are adapting Dana technologies to deliver additional wheel-drive and axle-based solutions for AWP applications up to 24 tonnes (26 tons).

Additionally, Dana is developing drive systems that integrate advanced electric motor and wheel-drive technologies in a single, compact package to optimize the performance of electric-powered AWPs with overall weights of 8 to 12 tonnes (9 to 13 tons).  The drive systems are now available for pre-production testing by OEMs.

Dana Technologies Improve Safety of AWPs
To help original-equipment manufacturers comply with platform design, load sensing, dynamic terrain sensing, safety requirements, and other global safety standards for AWPs, Dana leverages more than 20 years of experience to design and manufacture a broad range of Brevini motion products.  For example, Dana now offers a 32-bit Brevini® controller that enables smooth and accurate performance for joysticks through numerous adjustable parameters, including non-linear behavior.

Additionally, Dana is adapting the Spicer® Smart Suite™ Intelligent Load Monitoring System (ILMS) for use on AWPs.  Now available for pre-production testing by vehicle manufacturers, this system uses patented and proprietary data-collecting technologies across the vehicle to prevent tip-over incidents, estimate static loads, and supply intelligent calibration management.

Spicer Smart Suite ILMS is designed to alert the operator of potential tipping situations, reduce the risk of vehicle breakdowns, improve productivity and precision, and enhance the long-term durability of drive systems.
