Dana Introduces New Axle Lubrication Specification to Lower Operating Costs in Vocational Applications
|
Las Vegas, Nev., Jan. 24, 2007 – To ensure maximum reliability and performance of Spicer® axle systems in demanding vocational applications, Dana Corporation’s Commercial Vehicle Systems group has developed a new lubrication specification for high-performance, extended-drain lubrication fluids. The new specification (SHAES 429 Rev. A) covers full-and semi-synthetic fluids in numerous viscosities, each designed to suit a broad range of vocational applications and geographic regions.
According to Leo Wenstrup, senior product manager - drive axles for Dana, all current Roadranger® brand fluids, as well as fluids from other quality suppliers to the trucking industry, are approved to meet the requirements of the new specification.
“This new specification has been created in direct response to industry needs for enhanced performance and reduced maintenance costs,” Wenstrup said.
When compared to traditional mineral-based gear oils, the approved fluids offer superior protection for all hard-working torque carrying components such as gears, bearings, and shafts under a wide range of operating conditions. The fluids also offer superior low-temperature characteristics, which help protect axle components in harsh winter operations.
With the new specifications, the recommended drain intervals have been doubled from one year to two years in most vocational applications.
“There are significant performance and economic advantages to using these approved fluids in vocational applications,” Wenstrup said. “The enhanced film thickness and low temperature flow properties ensure maximum axle life in the most severe operations. In addition, the extended drain intervals help lower the cost of ownership in a variety of construction vocations by eliminating every other axle lube change, while enhancing axle performance and increasing vehicle time in operation.”
