Dana Corporation Announces New Single-Drive Axle for Motorhome Applications

Jan 4, 2005

Kalamazoo, Michigan -- Jan 04, 2005 -- Dana Corporation’s (NYSE: DCN) Commercial Vehicle Systems group has introduced the Dana Spicer® S16-130 single-drive axle to better meet the specific needs of motorhome manufacturers. The new lightweight axle is available in a variety of configurations that offer quiet gearing, reduced pinion standout and optimum pinion position for increased vehicle installation flexibility, and improved driveline angles.

“Motorhome manufacturers represent a key customer segment for Dana, and the Spicer S16-130 drive axle is now available in configurations that meet the fit-up requirements of both front- and rear-engine motorhome applications,” said Patxi Garcia, product manager – drive axles for Dana’s Commercial Vehicle Systems group. “By meeting this challenge, this drive axle represents another example of Dana’s commitment to providing our customers with the technology and systems they need and expect.”

For maximum flexibility, the S16-130 drive axle (gross axle weight rating of 14,500 to 16,500 pounds) can be used in motorhome applications that require GVW ratings of up to 26,500 pounds, and GCW ratings up to 40,000 pounds.

Featuring premium components in a lightweight package, the S16-130 axle is ideally suited for motorhome applications. Dana’s High Power Density (HPDTM) technology was utilized in the axle design to provide the benefits of maximizing component life and improving impact resistance at greater loads, while minimizing weight and cost. The 310-mm hypoid gearing and wheel differentials were specifically designed to maximize strength and increase axle life. Long face-width gear teeth reduce stress, for smooth, quiet operation and reduced friction to improve fuel efficiency.

The lightweight S16-130 drive axle increases available payload capacities. Extended lube change intervals can be enjoyed with the use of Dana-approved Roadranger® axle lubricants. In addition, the exclusive sealing pinion system keeps lube in and contamination out for lower maintenance costs.

Available optional upgrades for the Dana Spicer S16-130 axle include:

A unique limited-slip differential that reduces maintenance and lowers operating costs by eliminating special lubricant friction additives and wearable friction plates.

An axle-mounted parking brake that reduces vehicle complexity and simplifies OEM installation.

An axle-mounted electromagnetic retarder, which enhances braking performance and increases drivetrain options.

A carrier-mounted ring gear speed sensor, used in combination with anti-lock brake systems, which increases safety, flexibility, and installation simplicity.

Wide-track axles are available for maximum stability.
