Dana Announces New SmartRideTM Suspension Setting a New Standard in Weight and Performance

Feb 14, 2005

Tampa, FL -- Feb 14, 2005 -- The Commercial Vehicle Systems group of Dana Corporation (NYSE: DCN) has introduced the Dana® Spicer® SmartRideTM RN40 trailer suspension series – its lightest slider assembly to date with weight reductions of more than 200 pounds over previous models. Now the lightest slider assembly in its class, the RN40 is the latest addition in a new lineup of SmartRide trailer suspensions that were announced in November of last year.

“Dana continues to make tremendous progress in bringing about significant weight savings in our trailer suspension offerings,” said Mark Holley, product manager – trailer axle and chassis control systems. “And, as with previous SmartRide systems, we still maintain one of the best strength-to-weight ratios in the industry.”

Holley identified the suspension’s trailing arm, cross members, and intercostals as the key areas where weight reductions were made. The RN40 incorporates a narrow hangar design, which is used throughout the heavy-duty trailer industry.

To ensure durability, Dana engineers created a 4-1/4-inch wide bushing that is larger than competitive designs. The trailing arm was shape optimized using Dana proprietary design software to identify unique weight savings openings, as well as including the use of high strength steel only where it is needed. The new design of the trailing arm also allows the shock absorber to be placed in a more vertical position to provide better ride quality.

Dana pioneered the industry’s first use of 5-3/4-inch large diameter axle (LDA) tubing, as opposed to the traditional 5-inch tubing, contributing to the product’s integrity and 15 percent increase in bending stiffness. Increased stiffness reduces axle deflection to promote tire life and fuel economy.

Bendix® extended service truck-style brakes allow parts commonality to reduce inventories for fleets by up to 40 percent, while the self-contained short brake -cam improves braking performance and response. Three box widths are available, including 54-inch boxes to accommodate the growing use of wide base single tires.

Additional Dana Spicer SmartRide RN40 features include:

The optimized pin location in front of the hanger and robust, industry-leading inter-costal (side rail reinforcements) members provide greater strength and durability over competitive suspension designs.

The unique cam enclosure design improves lubrication, decreases the potential for contamination, and extends cam bushing life, resulting in reduced maintenance costs.

Large diameter air springs improve ride quality and lower operating cost.

The standard “Hutch” E-Z PullTM mechanical pin release system, or optional pneumatic pin release system that allows one person to reposition the slider box with minimal effort, provides simplified ease of operation.

All Dana Spicer SmartRide suspensions may be specified with a wide assortment of integrated options. Among the most popular are the Dana Spicer LMS™ Low Maintenance System wheel ends and the Dana Spicer Tire Inflation and Monitor System (TIMSTM). With a host of industry-proven long life and low maintenance features, the LMS package also carries an extended 5-year warranty. The patented Spicer TIMS provides improved tire life, improved safety, and improved fuel economy.

SmartRide suspensions may also be specified with key Bendix® components, including double and single anchor-pin s-cam brakes, extended service and 8.625-inch wide brake options, air disc brakes, ABS, air dryers, and valves.

With a gross tandem weight capacity rating of 40,000 pounds, the Dana Spicer SmartRide RN40 suspension is scheduled to begin series production during the fourth quarter.
