SpicerĀ® Wheeled Excavator Drivetrain System Offers Complete Systems Solution For The Construction Market

Nov 23, 2004

SHANGHAI, China -- Nov 23, 2004 -- Dana Corporation’s (NYSE:DCN) Off-Highway Systems group exhibited the complete Spicer® wheeled excavator drivetrain system at Bauma China Nov. 16 to 19 in Shanghai, China.  Designed for wheeled excavators with 13- to 19.5-ton operating weights, the drivetrain system is comprised of a Spicer HSE07™ hydrostatic transmission, Spicer Model 162HD™ and 262HD™ axles, and Spicer Life Series® SPL 55 driveshaft.

“The wheeled excavator drivetrain system is a representation of Dana Corporation’s ability to deliver complete systems capabilities for the off-highway market, “ said Fabrizzio Panizzolo, chief engineer, Dana Off-Highway Systems.  “Each component is engineered to provide customers with the low-maintenance, high-durability system solution they require for this type of construction application.”

The two-speed Spicer® HSE07™ hydrostatic transmission is specifically tailored for the wheeled excavator market to provide smooth shift characteristics, driver comfort, and enhanced vehicle performance.  It supplies a maximum input torque of 700 Nm, and can be axle- or remote-mounted for layout flexibility.  Electronic-controlled modulation technology provides high shift quality to facilitate controlled load management.  The HSE07™ transmission is available with a choice of mechanical or hydraulic downshift protection, and can be specified with an optional integrated SAHR parking brake.

The HSE07™ transmission is paired with Spicer® Model 162HD™ rigid- and 262HD™ steering- planetary drive axles, which include wheel-hub brakes to minimize jerking and digging.  The 162HD™ rigid-planetary drive axle features an integrated pivot mounting and rigid mounting-on-axle housing, with a spiral bevel gear.  It has a 1,920-mm track width, a 55.5-mm planetary hub length, and a 1-to-6 planetary reduction ratio.  The 262HD™ steering-planetary drive axle features an integrated steering cylinder and maximum 37-degree steering angle, with heavy-duty U-joints.  It has an integrated pivot mounting and spiral bevel gear, with a 1,920-mm track width, a 201.5-mm planetary hub length, and a 1-to-6 planetary reduction ratio.  Both the 162HD™ and 262HD™ axles provide a 27,000 daN (static) and 10,000 daN (dynamic) load capacity.

The Spicer® wheeled excavator drivetrain system is completed with a service-free Spicer Life Series® SPL 55 driveshaft, engineered to accommodate the higher loads and challenging conditions of construction applications.  The SPL 55 driveshaft features Glidecote® slip splines for reduced friction, and a hard-seal can to protect the slip member.  Advanced triple-lip sealing enhances service life by ensuring protection from dirt and other contaminants.

The SPL 55 is available with a full range of end fittings, including Spicer Life Series® Quick Disconnect™ end yokes that reduce driveshaft installation and removal times while minimizing field service requirements.

Dana’s Spicer® wheeled excavator drivetrain system is also available with Model 163™ and 263™ axles (to provide greater 30,000 daN static and 15,000 daN dynamic load capacities), and with an HSE09™ transmission (to accommodate up to 24-ton vehicle weights).
