Dana's Off-Highway Systems Group Provides Portal and Single Reduction Axles Engineered for the Construction Market

Mar 15, 2005

Las Vegas, Nevada -- Mar 15, 2005 -- Dana Corporation’s Off-Highway Systems group offers a comprehensive line of Spicer® portal and single reduction axles designed to meet the rigorous demands of construction industry applications.

A representative group of these axles will be exhibited at ConExpo, March 15-19, 2005 in Las Vegas.  They include:

Portal Axles

The Spicer® Model 25S, 35S and 50S portal axles are specifically engineered for compact utility tractors that require front-wheel drive capability, high turn angles, high ground clearance, and dependable performance.  Specific applications include small backhoe loaders and utility tractors requiring extra traction and pulling power.

To provide additional ground clearance, the axle’s center is offset above the center of the wheel.  In addition, torque multiplication in the wheel ends reduces the load on the central axle components.  The portal axle wheel ends feature high-strength as-forged gears, and spiral bevel gearing facilitates quieter operation.

The Model 25S, 35S and 50S portal axles are designed with an integral hydraulic power steering cylinder and a high steer angle (62 degrees at the outboard wheel) that provides smooth, effortless turning and the ability to achieve a tight turning radius.  All feature a standard open differential, with a 6.00-inch (152.40 mm) bolt circle diameter, 4.61-inch (117.00 mm) pilot diameter, and 0.54-inch (13.70 mm) pilot diameter length, with a 4.45-inch (113.10 mm) to 4.46-inch (113.30 mm) portal drop distance range.

With a 3,100-pound/1,410 Kg carry capacity, the Model 25S axle has a maximum track width of 50.20 inches (1,275 mm), a 3,100-pound (1,410 Kg) beam load, a total output torque of 1,200 pounds-per-foot (1,627 Nm), and an overall axle ratio of 21.38-to-1.  The Model 35S axle has a 3,800-pound/1,730-Kg carry capacity, with a maximum track width of 55.12 inches (1,400 mm), a 3,800-pound (1,730 Kg) beam load, a total output torque of 1,650 pounds-per-foot (2,237 Nm), and an overall axle ratio of 15.94-to-1.  Both models have a 60-degree maximum inside turn angle.

The Model 50S axle has a maximum track width of 53.00 inches (1,346 mm), a 4,800-pound (2,177 Kg) beam load, and a total output torque of 2,500 pounds-per-foot (3,390 Nm).  It has a 4,800-pound/2,177 Kg carry capacity, with a 58-degree maximum inside turn angle.

Single Reduction Axles
