Dana Corporation Showcases Electronic Torque Couplings, Differentials at Convergence 2004 Automotive Electronics Show

Oct 18, 2004

TOLEDO, Ohio, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Dana Corporation (NYSE: DCN)
announced today that it is showcasing two new series of traction technologies
at the Convergence 2004 vehicle electronics exhibition, beginning today in
Detroit.

Dana's TorqueTrak(TM) series of electronic torque coupling devices and
DynaTrak(TM) series of electronic differentials join a variety of exciting
Dana innovations, including power steering and fuel-cell components also
displayed at the show.
"Dana helped start the automotive revolution by introducing the industry's
first universal joint 100 years ago," said Michael J. Burns, Dana chairman and
CEO. "Today, we continue that tradition of improving vehicle reliability and
handling with the introduction of our new DynaTrak and TorqueTrak traction
technologies."
The DynaTrak electronically controlled limited-slip differential transfers
torque from side to side to maximize traction in reaction to a variety of
driving conditions. The DynaTrak differential has applications for
front-wheel, rear-wheel, four-wheel, and even all-wheel-drive vehicle
platforms. As a wheel begins to slip, anti-lock brake sensors within the
wheel ends detect wheel slippage, causing the clutch plates to engage.
The DynaTrak differential is an electronic version of Dana's proprietary
Hydra-Lok(TM) technology. Currently in the prototype stages, OEMs have
already expressed an interest in using DynaTrak technology in upcoming models.
Expanding its portfolio of torque management devices, Dana has also
developed the TorqueTrak series of electronic torque couplings, which offers
significant enhancements in mobility for front- or rear-wheel drive vehicles.
The series includes Dana's recently announced ring-gear torque coupling
technology for tight packaging constraints, as well as its new advanced
pinion-design torque coupling debuting today. The TorqueTrak technology
transfers torque from either side to side or front to rear, depending on the
vehicle requirements and application within the driveline.
The front-wheel-drive application provides side-to-side transfer of the
torque and connects the differential housing to the axle shaft. The
front-wheel version essentially slows the slipping wheel and allows the
differential to transfer torque to the wheel with traction.
The rear-wheel-drive application connects directly to the propshaft and
the axle pinion and transfers torque from front to rear. When the torque
balance is unequal, it adjusts the variable speed of the rear wheels to match
the front.
Dana's TorqueTrak technology can react in under 100 milliseconds and is
similar to the torque coupling technology that was introduced at the 2004 SAE
World Congress. This component is in the prototype stages, with initial
development and testing occurring within the last year.
"All-wheel-drive vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, and Dana's
DynaTrak and TorqueTrak series are more examples of how we're providing our
customers with the advanced traction technologies that meet or exceed
performance expectations," said Mike Laisure, president of Dana's Automotive
Systems Group. "These technologies are highly flexible, meeting various
vehicle needs."
Dana Corporation is a global leader in the design, engineering, and
manufacture of value-added products and systems for automotive, commercial,
