Dana Brazil's Gravatai Operation Receives ISO 14001 Environmental Certification

Jun 18, 1999

GRAVATAI, Brazil, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Dana Corporation (NYSE: DCN)
announced today that its operation in Gravatai is one of the first Brazilian
automotive businesses to receive the prestigious ISO 14001 certification for
environmental quality. The award recognizes Dana's compliance with all
Brazilian environmental regulations, the adoption of more environmentally
friendly production processes, and the aggressive implementation of
contamination-control programs.
Dana's Gravatai operation includes facilities for the Spicer Driveshaft,
Elastomers and Forging divisions of its Automotive Systems Group, and the
Perfect Circle and Victor Reinz divisions of its Engine Systems Group. The
Gravatai complex was also the first in Brazil to achieve QS-9000 quality
certification.
"Dana's long-standing policy is to encourage and support programs in all
of our facilities to meet the environmental standards embodied in the ISO
14001 certification," said Bill Carroll, president of the Automotive Systems
and a member of Dana's policy committee. "Dana people in Gravatai are leading
the way in environmental excellence, and we have challenged all of our other
South American facilities to follow their example."
To achieve the ISO 14001 certification, the Gravatai facilities created an
Environmental Management System (EMS) with the responsibility for developing
an environmental policy for the entire complex. The EMS program included
awareness and training programs, the introduction of new machining methods,
the launch of recycling programs, and an aggressive in-plant communication
campaign.
