Dana Corporation to Locate Heavy Axle and Brake Offices, Engineering and Technology Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan
Mar 4, 1998
KALAMAZOO, Mich., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Dana Corporation (NYSE: DCN) today announced plans to establish its Spicer Heavy Axle and Brake headquarters and an engineering and technology center in Kalamazoo, Mich. Announced at a ceremony attended by Michigan Gov. John Engler, the project will bring approximately 100 new jobs to the Kalamazoo area when the facility opens, with plans for an additional 100 jobs through future expansion. The Spicer Heavy Axle and Brake operation is expected to open in late 1999 on an approximately 20-acre site in Texas Township. Groundbreaking will take place later this year. The facility will initially employ approximately 200 people, including Heavy Axle and Brake people now located in Galesburg, Mich., as well as approximately 100 people from the Group's current location in Fort Wayne, Ind. According to Heavy Truck Components Group Vice President Rick Clayton, the new facility demonstrates Dana's commitment to growth and technology. "We're pleased at the prospect of bringing our Heavy Axle and Brake leadership together under one roof," Clayton said. "But what's really exciting is the engineering and technology aspects of the facility. The Kalamazoo operation will support testing, design, and prototyping that is vital to maintaining a leadership position in the global heavy axle market. "This announcement illustrates Dana's commitment to new technology and development, as well as our confidence in the growth opportunities within the Heavy Truck Components Group," he added. Clayton said the selection of Kalamazoo was the product of an intensive six-month site selection process. "A number of individuals and organizations in the Greater Kalamazoo area were instrumental in putting together the package that made this announcement possible," he said. "Governor Engler and the Michigan Jobs Commission, the Michigan Economic Growth Authority, local economic development officials, our future neighbors at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, and area residents were all extremely helpful throughout the site selection process." The need for the new Heavy Axle facility was solidified with Dana's Jan. 1, 1998, acquisition of Eaton Corporation's heavy axle and brake business. As part of the transaction, Dana acquired axle and brake technology developed at Eaton's research and development facility in Galesburg, Mich. Spicer Heavy Axle and Brake is part of Dana's Heavy Truck Components Group. With approximately 5,500 people, the Group operates 25 facilities in nine countries and currently includes four technology centers. Dana Corporation is a global leader in the engineering, manufacture, and distribution of products and services for the automotive, engine, heavy truck, off-highway, industrial, and leasing markets.
