Feb 24, 1997
TOLEDO, Ohio, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Dana Corporation's Spicer Transmission Division last night received the PACE Award from Automotive News magazine in a ceremony at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich. Spicer Transmission earned the award in the Medium Company category, sharing first-place honors with Bosch Automotive Motor Systems Corporation. In addition, a Dana plant in Stockton, Calif., nominated for the innovative relationship it has developed with its customer, was a finalist in the competition. Spicer Transmission was honored for its AutoMate2(R) transmission for Class 8 trucks. Designed to reduce engine wear, the transmission features a programmed electronic controller to optimize and automate the shifting of the top two gears of the manual transmission, where 90 percent of gearshift activity takes place for most truck driving. The innovation reduces distractions for truck drivers, saves fuel and cuts driveline maintenance. Spicer Transmission worked with engine control and electronics experts from several companies to develop a transmission that would work with a variety of engines. The Stockton plant, which is part of Dana's Parish Light Vehicles Structures Division, supplies vehicle frame assemblies for the Toyota Tacoma(R) truck to New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI) in Fremont, Calif. The Stockton Plant, NUMMI and Toyota share daily process planning and problem solving is accomplished jointly. The three companies cross-train employees. Stockton keeps inventories at less than one day's production and has achieved 99.9 percent on-time delivery, while shipping five different types of truck frames to the Fremont plant 63 miles away. Dana's Spicer Driveshaft Division was a 1995 PACE Award winner for its innovative universal joint. Co-sponsored by Automotive News and Ernst & Young LLP, the PACE awards recognize leadership, results and innovation among North America's top automotive suppliers.
