"Being selected to supply both the front- and rear-axle differentials for
the BMW X5 SAV speaks to Dana's solid technical capabilities," said
Michael J. Burns, Dana CEO and president. "As we prepare to celebrate 100
years of advancing automotive innovation, we remain dedicated to enhancing
these technologies in order to anticipate and satisfy the high standards of
the world's leading vehicle manufacturers."
The front and rear differentials are assembled at Dana's recently opened
manufacturing facility in Orangeburg, S.C., using sophisticated manufacturing
systems to ensure the finished differentials meet the stringent expectations
BMW has for performance.
Dana's quality assurance technology in Orangeburg employs 100-percent
on-line coordinate measuring devices, which integrate the final machined
dimensions of the gears and housing in real time, while also calculating their
optimum relative positions for final assembly. The process verifies that
incoming components are within specification and then determines the best
final assembly positions from the actual dimensions of the components.
Dana is employing advanced manufacturing processes to incorporate face-hob
ring gear and pinion tooth geometry, which relies on a high-speed,
environmentally friendly machining process to cut the gears to the precision
dimensions required by the final system specifications.
Dana Corporation is a global leader in the design, engineering, and
manufacture of value-added products and systems for automotive, commercial,
and off-highway vehicles. Delivering on a century of innovation, the
company's continuing operations employ approximately 45,000 people worldwide
dedicated to advancing the science of mobility. Founded in 1904 and based in
Toledo, Ohio, Dana operates technology, manufacturing, and customer-service
facilities in 30 countries. Sales from continuing operations totaled $7.9
billion in 2003. Dana's Internet address is http://www.dana.com .
