"Through Dana's 100 years of experience, we have earned a solid reputation
for delivering propshafts and axles that operate comfortably and consistently
in demanding environments," said Bill Carroll, Dana's acting president and
chief operating officer. "The fact that Nissan has selected Dana to provide
these critical components to its luxury Infiniti SUV speaks to the outstanding
ride quality, strength, and durability that our driveline products deliver."
The Dana Model 205 independent front axle (IFA) has an industry-first,
one-piece, die-cast aluminum carrier with integrated tube. The IFA carrier
features a patented oil-flow design and improved pinion seal. Lab testing has
confirmed significant strength improvement over traditional designs for an
axle this size. In addition, the use of aluminum results in a 35-percent
weight reduction over an equivalent cast-iron carrier.
In addition to these weight, strength, and performance benefits, Dana's
driveline technology offers a number of other advantages. Increasing the
number of teeth on the front axle ring gear and pinion sets, along with
proprietary heat treating and shot peening, provides smoother gear operation.
This allows for significantly reduced noise, vibration, and harshness and
improved axle durability. These gear sets passed a rigorous Nissan standard
250,000-mile durability test.
