The World Excellence Awards provide annual recognition based on quality,
cost and delivery performance. Forty-one suppliers from 13 countries won
awards in various categories. Dana earned the Recognition of Achievement.
Tony Brown, Ford vice president, Global Purchasing, said, "Congratulations
to Dana Corporation. You are one of Ford's most valuable partners. Without
your extraordinary contributions, we could not have achieved many of our goals
in 2002."
The award honors Dana for warranty reduction through cooperative efforts
with Ford to reduce warranty-related costs on driveline axles on a variety of
high-volume Ford trucks and SUVs. These applications include the front drive
axles for the Ford Explorer SUV and Ranger compact light truck; front and rear
drive axles for the Ford Super Duty F-Series truck line; Econoline 250, 350,
and 450 vans; and the Escape SUV rear axle.
Dana worked closely with Ford to establish an aggressive system to quickly
address warranty issues while sharing best practices with the OEM engineers to
help eliminate future warranty costs. This process uses extensive "real
world" engineering analysis comparing original design parameters with how
consumers actually use their vehicles. The knowledge is used to improve
existing and future applications.
"The warranty reduction system goes much deeper than initial quality; it
targets the real drivers of our industry -- the vehicle consumer," said Bob
Jones, director of sales for Ford business with Dana's Automotive Systems
Group. "Consumers expect their vehicles to handle increasing stresses and
demands. This warranty reduction system is shaped by consumers' needs and
expectations, but is also supported by outstanding engineering and processes
developed by Ford and Dana. The end result is a more reliable vehicle that
will keep consumers coming back to the manufacturer."
This marks the second time in three years that Dana has received Ford
Motor Company's World Excellence Award - Recognition of Achievement in the
area of warranty reduction.
