"Our involvement with the versatile, high-performance Liberty continues a heritage extending back to Dana's support of the very first Jeep vehicles produced in the 1940s." Dana has begun production of driveshaft and axle components in support of the 2002 model year Liberty. The driveshafts, a combination of Spicer(R) 1310 and 1330 Series steel, rear main assemblies, feature Spicer Life(TM) maintenance-free, universal joints. The driveshafts will be assembled at the Spicer Driveshaft Group's Toledo, Ohio, Regional Driveshaft Center for delivery to DaimlerChrysler's new Toledo North Assembly Plant. Dana will also provide Spicer independent front and beam rear axle assemblies, offering a wide range of enhancements. These improvements include an all-aluminum carrier and tube for improved fuel efficiency, larger pinion stem and bearings for enhanced NVH characteristics, and net-formed differential gears for increased strength and durability. Dana will supply a portion of the rear axles for the Jeep Liberty, with the remainder to be manufactured by DaimlerChrysler. Both the front and rear axle assemblies will be produced at the Spicer Light Axle Group's Dry Ridge, Ky., axle facility. Bill Carroll, president of Dana's Automotive Systems Group, said, "The combination of Dana's and Jeep's strong technologies has helped to create an exciting vehicle. The advanced gear designs of our axle assemblies and lightweight, but durable, characteristics of our driveshaft products will play a key role in meeting the consumer-driven requirements of this exceptional new vehicle." In addition to the axle and driveshaft products, Dana will also supply a series of engine and fluid systems products for the Liberty, including coupled hose products, side curtain airbag tubes, cooling products, piston rings, bearings, and cylinder-head gasket covers. The all-new Jeep Liberty is a versatile sport utility delivering a unique combination of ruggedness, refinement, and superior on-road handling. The Liberty complements DaimlerChrysler's Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Wrangler vehicles, both of which Dana supports with axle and driveshaft products.
