Toledo Public Schools-Dana Corp. Team Participate on Championship Team in National Engineering Competition

    TOLEDO, Ohio, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- A team of students and teachers
from Toledo Technology Academy and Rogers High School and engineers from Dana
Corp. were part of the "National Championship Alliance" of the FIRST Robotics
Competition.

    FIRST, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is a
nonprofit organization that teams professionals and students together for a
hands-on, inside look at the areas of science, engineering, and technology.
Toward that goal, the annual robotics contest challenges teams to design and
develop a "champion robot" in just six weeks that performs a series of
specific tasks.
    After eight qualifying matches, the Toledo Public Schools-Dana Corp. robot
-- named Jonny after a cartoon character -- was picked by its division's top-
ranked team from Hammond, Indiana to join its "alliance" in the championship
contest.  Jonny was picked because its speed and versatility complemented the
strengths of the robots from the other four teams in the alliance.  The four
divisional alliances then competed in the championship, and Jonny earned a
share of the top honor for the local team.
    Seventeen students, three teachers, and 14 Dana professionals developed
Jonny, learning as much about teamwork along the way as engineering. More than
500 teams from the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, and Brazil participated in the
2001 regional and national competitions.  The national contest was held at
Walt Disney World's Epcot(R) Center in Orlando, Florida.

    One student from Rogers High School, David Phillips, said the experience
played a part in his decision to pursue a career in engineering and robotics.
    Dana professionals also team up annually with students from Bedford Public
Schools' Smith Road Elementary School each year in the FIRST LEGO(R) League.
An offshoot of the robotics competition, this program introduces younger
students, ages 9 to 14, to the wonders of science, math and technology.  The
Dana Unicorns team was one of six teams in the nation invited to participate
in a FIRST LEGO League exhibition held at Epcot during the robotics national
competition. The team received the top design award from the judges.
