ISO 14001 certification, considered the benchmark of environmental excellence globally, recognizes support of environmental protection and the prevention of pollution, as well as compliance with environmental laws and regulations. "We are proud to have been recognized for attaining these significant milestones in the areas of quality and environmental stewardship," said Cape Girardeau Plant Manager Larry Dillon. "Of course, this achievement is largely a reflection of our people. As important as these certifications are, I am even more impressed by the fact that our people have embraced these challenges and made attaining these pursuits part of their everyday processes." In being recommended for QS-9000 certification, people at Cape Girardeau successfully completed an audit encompassing all its quality systems and standard operating procedures. In becoming Dana's first light axle facility to be recommended for ISO 14001 certification, the more than 400 Dana people at Cape Girardeau participated in classroom training and education related to environmental compliance. The process included assessment of all potential environmental exposures and their possible impacts, as well as development of comprehensive systems for environmental management. "We are fortunate that Cape Girardeau has a strong history in both quality systems and environmental compliance," Dillon said. "At the same time, we recognize that these certifications are just another step in an ongoing process." The QS-9000 and ISO 14001 audits were performed by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Upon recommendation, there is typically a 30-45 day period before formal QS-9000 and ISO 14001 certifications are issued. The Cape Girardeau facility has recently garnered several quality honors. In 1999, the facility was one of four organizations honored by the State of Missouri with its inaugural Facet of Excellence award, which recognizes organizations that demonstrate areas of significant achievement in specific items of Missouri Quality Award criteria. Additionally, the Cape Girardeau facility was honored as a finalist in Industry Week magazine's 1999 Best Plants in North America competition.
