The Facet of Excellence award recognizes organizations that demonstrate
areas of significant achievement in specific items of Missouri Quality Award
criteria. The Cape Girardeau facility was recognized for its work systems.
The facility created a unique four-shift, seven-day operation with broad job
descriptions that give employees multiple responsibilities. The result is a
flexible, adaptive system that helps to ensure that all work tasks are covered
at all times.
The Cape Girardeau light vehicle axle facility manufactures a variety of
axle products and related components for internal operations that supply
original equipment vehicle manufacturers including DaimlerChrysler, Ford,
Isuzu, and Land Rover.
"We are proud to have been recognized by the State of Missouri as a Facet
of Excellence award winner," said Cape Girardeau Plant Manager Dave Blanchard,
who is currently on special assignment at the Spicer Light Axle Group division
offices in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Added interim plant manager Larry Dillon, "The work systems for which we
have been awarded are only one element of the story. Any successful system
depends on the abilities of the people that employ it and the people at Cape
Girardeau are truly deserving of this recognition."
Dana has garnered previous state-level quality honors in Missouri. In
1994, Cape Girardeau's sister light vehicle axle facility in Columbia was
honored as a Missouri Quality Award recipient. Additionally, the Cape
Girardeau facility was honored earlier this year as a finalist in Industry
Week magazine's Best Plants in North America competition.
The Cape Girardeau light vehicle axle facility is part of Dana's
Automotive Axle Products Group, consisting of more than 20 manufacturing,
assembly, and research and development facilities in 16 nations. The axle
group is part of Dana's Automotive Systems Group, which provides axles,
driveshafts, structural products, brake and clutch actuation products,
steering and suspension products, and modules and systems for a $30 billion
global marketplace. The Automotive Systems Group had combined 1998 sales of
$4.3 billion.
Dana Corporation is one of the world's largest independent suppliers to
vehicle manufacturers and their related aftermarkets. Founded in 1904 and
