Dana Breaks Ground for Heavy Axle and Brake Global Headquarters, Engineering and Technology Center

Jun 23, 1998

KALAMAZOO, Mich., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- In a ceremony attended by
Michigan Gov. John Engler, Dana Corporation (NYSE: DCN) today broke ground for
its new Spicer Heavy Axle and Brake headquarters and engineering and
technology center near Kalamazoo, Mich.
The 150,000-square-foot facility is expected to open in August 1999 and
will be constructed on a 20-acre site in Texas Township. It will be Dana's
20th facility in Michigan.
The facility initially will employ approximately 200 people, including
people now working in nearby Galesburg, Mich., and in Ft. Wayne, Ind. As many
as 100 additional jobs are possible through future expansion.
Rick Clayton, vice president of Dana's Heavy Truck Components Group, said,
"Today we see Dana's commitment to new technology and development, as well as
confidence in the growth opportunities of our group. This facility will
support testing, design, and prototyping that is vital to maintaining a
leadership position in the global heavy axle market."
Site selection for the project was the result of an intensive six-month
review process.
"A number of individuals and organizations in the Greater Kalamazoo area
were instrumental in putting together a package that made this day possible,"
Clayton said. "Governor Engler and the Michigan Jobs Commission, the Michigan
Economic Growth Authority, local economic development officials, our future
neighbors at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, and area residents were all
extremely helpful throughout the site selection process."
The facility is needed as a result of Dana's acquisition of the heavy axle
and brake business of Eaton Corporation earlier this year. The acquisition
included axle and brake technology developed at Eaton's research and
development facility in Galesburg.
Spicer Heavy Axle and Brake is part of Dana's Heavy Truck Components
Group. With approximately 5,500 people, the group operates 25 facilities in
nine countries.
Dana Corporation is a global leader in the engineering, manufacture, and
distribution of products and services for the automotive, engine, heavy truck,
off-highway, industrial, and leasing markets. Founded in 1904 and based in
Toledo, Ohio, Dana operates facilities in 30 countries and employs more than
50,000 people. The company reported record sales of $8.3 billion in 1997.
