Dana's Rolling Chassis Module Named Finalist for 1999 PACE Award

Mar 2, 1999

TOLEDO, Ohio, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Dana Corporation (NYSE: DCN)
announced today that its Rolling Chassis(TM) modular system was named finalist
for the 1999 Automotive News PACE(TM) Award for innovative product,
manufacturing, and service achievements.
The Rolling Chassis system is the most complex module ever supplied to an
original equipment manufacturer for a light-duty vehicle application. It
incorporates components from 66 suppliers and includes the frame, front and
rear axles, driveshaft, suspension, steering system, brakes, fuel tank,
electrical circuits, wheels, and tires.
The module system is used by DaimlerChrysler AG in Campo Largo, Brazil,
for the Dodge Dakota pickup truck and accounts for more than 25 percent of the
finished vehicle. Along with providing many of the components in the system,
Dana provides overall program management, including worldwide logistics,
engineering change management, warranty administration, and Tier II scheduling
and development. This has reduced Chrysler's plant investment, inventory
investment, number of suppliers to manage, and time to market.
"It's a true honor for the Rolling Chassis system to be named finalist for
this prestigious award," said Mike Laisure, vice president of Dana's Modules &
Systems Group. "This is a recognition not only of Dana Corporation, but also
of DaimlerChrysler and Chrysler do Brasil, which were willing to work with us
in this first-of-its-kind venture. It is also a recognition of our supplier
partners."
In the last five years, the PACE awards have recognized Dana divisions
seven times for their individual components or manufacturing processes.
Dana's Spicer Driveshaft Division and former transmission division are
previous recipients of the award, which was first presented in 1995.
Additionally, Dana's Parish Light Vehicle Structures Division was twice
honored as a finalist, the Spicer Heavy Axle and Brake Division was named a
finalist in 1996, and Dana's Plumley Division was honored as a finalist in
1998.
Co-sponsored by Automotive News and Ernst & Young LLP, the PACE (Premier
Automotive suppliers' Contributions to Excellence) Awards recognize automotive
suppliers of all sizes for innovative product, manufacturing, and service
achievements. Winners of the 1999 award were announced Monday evening at an
awards ceremony at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich.
Part of Dana's Automotive Systems strategic business unit, the Modules &
Systems Group coordinates Dana's light- and medium-duty global modular
activity, which involves 10 facilities in seven nations. This activity
includes current projects with major original equipment manufacturers such as
DaimlerChrysler AG, Fiat Auto Argentina S.A., Ford Motor Company, General
Motors Corporation, Toyota Motor Corporation, Volkswagen A.G., and A.B. Volvo.
Dana Corporation is one of the world's largest independent suppliers to
vehicle manufacturers and their related aftermarkets. Founded in 1904 and
