Volkswagen Chooses Dana's Lightweight Brake and Clutch Systems for New Compact Car Models

Jul 21, 1999

TOLEDO, Ohio, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Dana Corporation (NYSE: DCN) has
been selected to supply Volkswagen with the first hydraulic clutch actuation
systems the OEM will use in its compact car models. Along with the hydraulic
systems, Dana also will supply brake boosters, wheel cylinders, and brake
hoses for Volkswagen's 2000 through 2003 compact car models.
This contract is worth $40 million in sales to Dana Corporation, which
will manufacture these products and systems in its FTE automotive facilities
in Germany, Mexico, and Brazil. FTE automotive, a division of Dana's
Automotive Systems Group, is a worldwide market leader in clutch and brake
systems.
Previously, Volkswagen utilized mechanical clutch actuation systems in its
compact car models. The hydraulic clutch actuation systems provide a higher
mechanical efficiency and are self-setting, requiring less assembly time. The
new, lighter system also offers plastic master and slave cylinders, which are
suitable for recycling.
In addition, FTE will supply a vacuum brake booster consisting of an
aluminum master cylinder and aluminum booster. Volkswagen will utilize the
FTE modules and systems for a number of its compact car models sold in Europe
and Latin and South America, such as the Polo, Polo Classic, Skoda, Felicia,
Gol, Parrati, and Saveiro.
"We are able to provide Volkswagen with the expertise of a global
engineering and technology leader in under-the-vehicle systems integration,"
said Bill Carroll, president of Dana's Automotive Systems Group. "Our
hydraulic clutch actuation systems are exemplary in terms of their lightweight
construction, recycleability, corrosion resistance, and high efficiency."
Dana's Automotive Systems Group provides under-the-vehicle products and
integrated modules and systems to customers anywhere in the world. The
Automotive Systems Group consists of Spicer(R) axle products, Spicer(R)
driveshaft products, Parish(R) structural products, Nakata(R) steering and

engineering integration and logistics unit.
