Improved Spicer® LMS™ Hub System Delivers Greater Reliability, Improved Maintenance to Customers

Mar 31, 2011

LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Dana Holding Corporation (NYSE: DAN) announced the introduction of a hub system that offers original-equipment and end-user customers value and complexity savings while significantly improving driveline reliability and maintenance time.  The new Spicer® LMSi™ incorporates Dana's industry proven LMS™ (Low Maintenance System) technology and new integrated features that further enhance end-user and OEM savings and convenience.

The LMSi hub was designed using the latest in advanced hub technologies. Major benefits include improved retention clamp load for more reliable performance.  LMSi also reduces disassembly and installation times by up to five minutes versus conventional hub systems and enhances ease of removal for improved shop safety. The LMSi supports a more eco-friendly position than other designs through better control of contaminates during removal and best-in-class efficient seal technology. The new seal technology provides reduced friction for minimized rolling resistance delivering improvements in fuel efficiency and a reduction of heat to maximize seal life.

Through the use of a standard robust aluminum hub, Spicer LMSi offers customers a 20 pound per hub weight advantage when compared with conventional iron hubs.  And like the LMS, the LMSi hub allows Dana to approve the use of tandem drive axles from 38,000 to 40,000 lbs. when using 2-inch outset wheels with wide-base tires. This saves the fleets money and reduces complexity by eliminating the need to specify a more costly, non-standard, wide-width drive axle with unique outset wheels.

"The new Spicer LMSi hubs are an ideal specification for any fleet or vehicle operator looking to improve their bottom line and overall profitability," said Dan Souhan, product manager at Dana.  "With increasing fuel prices and the migration toward larger brakes to meet industry regulated stopping distance requirements, we built on our proven LMS technology to surpass the current systems utilized in the trucking industry for world-class performance and minimal downtime."

Spicer LMSi is specifically designed to extend user service intervals to 500,000 miles, and is available for a wide range of axle capacities for both steer and drive axles.  LMSi can be OE factory-filled with Roadranger FE 75W-90 Synthetic Lubricants, for further supporting fuel efficiency in drive axle systems. The LMSi hubs are also compatible with Extended Life Roadranger Synthetic Lubes.

LMS is a registered trademark of Dana Holding Corporation and represents other Dana-patented low-maintenance products including; Dana's LMS kingpin joint and Dana's axle housing breather design.
